Focus and Scope

The Oregon Undergraduate Research (OUR) Journal solicits outstanding undergraduate research and creative projects by University of Oregon students. You may submit for publication if you meet these terms:
• Your work is original and unpublished.
• Your project is nominated by your faculty mentor.

Authors in all fields and areas of study are encouraged to apply. Previous authors have submitted shortened Clark Honors College theses, papers that have won the Library's Undergraduate Research Award, or papers that have won departmental undergraduate awards, like the George Rebec Essay Prize in Philosophy, and Anthropology's Undergraduate Paper of the Year.

Your faculty mentor’s formal approval of the manuscript is required before the submission deadline. The faculty nomination certifies that the project meets OUR Journal standards, including all required materials in specified formats.

All works published in OUR Journal must adhere to the following standards:
• The aims and significance of the research are described clearly for a multidisciplinary audience. Art projects, performance videos, and literary works that are not primarily 'scholarly texts' must include a critical essay of 500-1500 words, plus a bibliography or list of references.
• The project is well designed and appropriately formatted.
• Results are thoroughly interpreted and analyzed.
• All text is well written, efficiently organized, logically convincing and grammatically correct, and citations conform to appropriate disciplinary standards.
• Supporting materials—illustrations, graphs, references—reinforce the descriptions and claims made in the text.
• If there are multiple authors, the lead author must be a UO undergraduate.

Peer Review Process

All submissions to OUR Journal require a nomination from a faculty mentor. They are then reviewed by at least two undergraduate peer reviewers using a double-blind peer review protocol (reviewer does not know the identity of the author, and review results are provided to the author anonymously).
Reviewers are asked to evaluate based on the quality and originality of the work and on its accessibility to a general academic audience. Articles are further reviewed as appropriate by the undergraduate editors, faculty, and journal managers.

Publication Frequency

OUR Journal began life as an annual in Fall 2011 (Volume 1 Number 1). Submissions for May 2012 publication will be taken until February 24, 2012.

Works published in OUR Journal may be cited as (V#/N# Fall/Year).

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
